Frequently asked questions

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can make diagnoses and prescribe medication. A psychologist is not a medical doctor, but can play an important role in assessment. Psychologists offer counselling and psychotherapy. Psychotherapy may be provided by both doctors and psychologists if they have the appropriate qualification.

Psychotherapy is a talking treatment aimed at long-term change. It helps people identify the causes of emotional distress and develop a deeper understanding of their own patterns and experiences.

Medication-based treatments act at a biological level and can help relieve symptoms and stabilise acute phases.

If you suspect depression, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, ADHD, sleep disorders, personality disorders, trauma, addictions or other mental health problems.

If you have been feeling unwell for a long period of time (weeks, months or even years), and are having difficulties functioning in everyday life, or feel that you cannot cope with your problems on your own. Then it is advisable to seek professional help.

The first session lasts about 50 minutes. The specialist doctor or therapist takes a history (the background to your symptoms) and makes a recommendation for further treatment.

The duration depends on the individual and the issues involved. It can range from a few sessions to several months or years. Counselling is usually shorter, whereas psychotherapy typically lasts several months and requires weekly or fortnightly sessions.

In milder cases, psychotherapy alone may help. In more severe cases, a combination of medication and therapy can be the most effective treatment.

Antidepressants do not usually cause dependence. However, when stopping them, they should always be tapered slowly and gradually.

Anxiolytic medicines such as benzodiazepines, as well as certain sleeping tablets, can cause dependence if taken regularly over a longer period. They should therefore be used only where clinically justified and exclusively under medical supervision for a short period – ideally only for a few weeks.

This depends on the type of medication, the symptoms and the medical history. Antidepressants should be taken for at least 6 months, and for at least a year in cases of recurrent depressive episodes. Stopping too early or abruptly can lead to a return of symptoms.

No referral is required for a private practice. For treatment funded by statutory health insurance, a referral is usually necessary. If you would like to claim through a health insurance fund, you should check the relevant rules, as invoices can only be reimbursed under certain conditions.

By telephone, email or through our online appointment booking system.

Yes, by prior arrangement, appointments can take place by video call.

It is important to cancel the appointment in good time, as other patients may have been waiting for an appointment for months. If an appointment is not cancelled at least 24 hours in advance, the practice or therapist may charge a cancellation fee.

We can issue a German-language invoice, which you can submit to your private health insurer. Patients with statutory health insurance should check with their insurer.

We offer group therapies that are usually less expensive than individual therapies.
