Frequently asked questions

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can make diagnoses and prescribe medication. A psychologist is not a medical doctor, but can play an important role in assessment. Psychologists offer counselling and psychotherapy. Psychotherapy may be provided by both doctors and psychologists if they have the appropriate qualification.

Psychological counselling helps people understand their difficulties, develop coping strategies and make practical changes in everyday life.

Medication-based treatments act at a biological level and can help relieve symptoms and stabilise acute phases.

If you experience or suspect depression, anxiety, panic attacks, ADHD, sleep problems, mood changes, emotional regulation difficulties, trauma-related symptoms, burnout or other mental health concerns.

It may be helpful to seek professional support if emotional or mental health difficulties have persisted for several weeks or longer, interfere with your everyday life, work, studies or relationships, or feel difficult to manage on your own. A psychiatrist or psychologist can help assess your situation and recommend appropriate next steps.

The first consultation lasts about 50 minutes. The psychiatrist or psychologist discusses your symptoms, relevant background and current difficulties, then recommends the most appropriate next steps.

The duration depends on your individual needs and the difficulties involved. Counselling may consist of a few focused sessions or continue over a longer period. The recommended frequency and duration are discussed with your psychologist.

Yes. Depending on the symptoms and individual needs, psychological counselling may be used alone or alongside medication-based treatment. A psychiatrist can advise whether medication is appropriate, while a psychologist can provide practical psychological support.

Antidepressants do not usually cause dependence. However, when stopping them, they should always be tapered slowly and gradually.

Anxiolytic medicines such as benzodiazepines, as well as certain sleeping tablets, can cause dependence if taken regularly over a longer period. They should therefore be used only where clinically justified and exclusively under medical supervision for a short period – ideally only for a few weeks.

This depends on the type of medication, the symptoms and the medical history. Antidepressants should be taken for at least 6 months, and for at least a year in cases of recurrent depressive episodes. Stopping too early or abruptly can lead to a return of symptoms.

No referral is required to book an appointment at our private clinic. If you plan to claim reimbursement from a private or international health insurer, please check your policy and the insurer’s requirements in advance.

Yes, by prior arrangement, appointments can take place by video call.

It is important to cancel the appointment in good time, as other patients may have been waiting for months. If an appointment is not cancelled at least 24 hours in advance, the practice or specialist may charge a cancellation fee.

Mental Mood Medical is a private outpatient clinic. We can issue an English-language invoice, which you may submit to your private or international health insurer. Reimbursement depends on your individual insurance policy, so please check the conditions with your insurer in advance.
