Living abroad can be exciting and exhausting at the same time. A new language, new rules, people you love far away – and the everyday things that used to be easy suddenly take more energy. Sometimes it helps to talk things through with someone who understands what it is like to build a life in another country.

Our psychologists offer confidential, 50-minute consultations in English, in person at our practice in central Budapest or online. You don’t need a referral, and you can book directly with the psychologist you choose.

For expats and digital nomads

Counselling for expats and digital nomads in Budapest

Moving to a new country changes more than your address. Our psychologists work with people who are settling in, missing home, juggling a demanding job or deciding whether to stay. Sarah Grunwell has lived and worked internationally herself. If you work remotely and move between countries, we can support you with the loneliness, missing routine and blurred boundaries that often come with it.

  • No Hungarian needed – sessions, emails and paperwork in English.
  • English invoices you can submit to your insurer.
  • No referral, no waiting list – book directly with the psychologist you choose.
  • In person or online – also if you are temporarily abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with any of our psychologists.

I’m a digital nomad staying in Budapest for a few months. Can I still book?

Yes. You can book a single consultation or a few sessions while you are in Budapest, in person or online. You don’t need a referral or Hungarian health insurance.

Is it confidential?

Yes. Everything you share in your sessions is confidential, in line with professional ethics and data protection law.

What is the difference between a psychologist, a psychotherapist and a psychiatrist?

A psychologist offers counselling and psychological support. In Hungary, “psychotherapist” is a protected title that requires additional specialist training. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and prescribe medication. If you need a psychiatrist, our English-speaking psychiatrist is also available – see Our team.

Can I have sessions online from abroad?

Yes. If you are temporarily outside Hungary, we can continue your sessions online.

Can I claim the fee from my insurance?

We issue invoices in English. Whether your insurer reimburses psychological counselling depends on your policy – please check with them.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what you’d like to work on. Some people come for a few sessions, others for longer. You’ll discuss this with your psychologist in the first session.

Do you see couples?

Yes. Sarah Grunwell works with couples, including intercultural couples. A couples session lasts 50 minutes (30,000 Ft) or 90 minutes (45,000 Ft). Please mention it in your message when you book.

What if I’m in crisis?

We are not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger, call 112.
